Part 2

Chapter 6

“Maya, are you ready for this?” The sound of Gregory’s questioning voice resonated from the air and pulled Maya from her reverie.

Since the sheet tangling experience that she had with both Jeremy and Gregory the night before, Maya had been concentrating as hard as she could on the plot to save their lives. The plan had been set in motion the night before, and almost all the steps she would need to take to get into King Arigal's good graces were memorized. However, she didn’t want to leave anything to chance. If they were going to attempt to bring down King Arigal, then the plan needed to be flawless. There was absolutely no room for error. One mistake meant the loss of their lives.

“Ready for what?” Maya asked back while she kept her attention focused on the piece of paper before her. She was drawing out a diagram of the building as Jeremy had described it to her. She wanted to have something to at least visualize.

“Being bitten,” said Gregory. “...Turning into a vampire and knowing that your life is going to be changed forever?”

Maya found herself growing slightly agitated upon hearing Gregory's words. Did he not realize why she was doing this in the first place? If she didn’t become a vampire then none of them would have a life to be changed. She wondered if Gregory realized that he was becoming an accomplice to their plan, and what that would mean if she and Jeremy failed. He would be taken down with them as far as she was concerned and she needed to do what she could do to prevent their deaths from happening.

“I need to talk to my girlfriend, Gregory,” Jeremy’s voice echoed off the walls of the hallway. “If you wouldn’t mind giving us some privacy, please."

The expression that Jeremy was wearing immediately told Maya that he was having second doubts about their plan. She couldn’t have that. Maya needed Jeremy to stay focused regardless of whose life was being put at risk. She knew what she was getting herself into, and she was prepared to die.

“Jeremy?” Maya asked after she watched Gregory practically glide from the room they were in.

“Are you sure this is what you want to do?” Jeremy questioned immediately. “There is another way. We can run. We can change time zones every three months and not have to worry about anything because tracking us down takes time and resources. King Arigal having to ask other kings around the world to kill us would take a significant amount of effort too. We would end up moving around a lot, but we would be safe.”

Maya shook her head in response. “That wouldn’t work. Eventually, we would have all of the vampire kings upset with us. We'd just be delaying our deaths."

Jeremy exhaled, knowing there was no other way to save both of their lives. “Then let’s do this,” he said while extending his hand for Maya to take.

Her breath hitched in her throat.
